FAQs – Identity Documents (EU/EEA)

1. Do you accept paper national ID cards from EU/EEA countries? Yes — we currently accept paper national ID cards if they are:

  • officially issued by an EU/EEA Member State, and
  • still valid according to the issuing country’s rules.

However, many of these older ID formats are being phased out across the EU, so we may ask for an alternative document if the paper ID cannot be verified during the process.

2. Why are paper ID cards being phased out? Under EU regulations, older ID formats — including paper ID cards and non-biometric plastic IDs — are being replaced by more secure, biometric ID cards. These new documents help reduce fraud and improve document verification during online onboarding.

This means that while your paper ID may still be legally valid today, some countries will stop recognising them in the coming years.

3. What happens if my paper ID is valid but cannot be verified? If your document is valid but our verification system can’t assess it (e.g., due to low image quality or lack of security features), we may ask for:

  • a passport, or
  • a biometric national ID card (new EU format).

This doesn’t mean your paper ID is invalid — only that additional verification is needed.

4. Will paper ID cards eventually stop being accepted? Yes. As EU Member States introduce biometric ID cards, older paper IDs will progressively expire or lose validity. Once a paper ID reaches its national or EU-mandated end date, we will no longer be able to accept it.

We’ll update our requirements in line with these changes.

5. Can I still complete onboarding using a paper ID today? Yes — if your paper ID is currently valid and can be successfully verified, you can use it to complete onboarding.

If verification fails, we may request a more secure document to finalise the process.

6. What should I do if I still have an old paper ID? You can continue using it as long as it remains valid, but we recommend preparing for the transition by:

  • renewing your ID with your national authority, or
  • obtaining a passport if you don’t have a biometric ID card yet.

This helps avoid delays with online services as older documents are phased out.
