Setting a secure password

To protect oneself effectively, it is necessary to use strong passwords, avoid using the same password for multiple purposes, and change passwords regularly.

For a password to be strong, it must be randomly chosen from a set of passwords with an equal chance of being selected. For example, a word found in the dictionary can be cracked within a matter of seconds. Adding a capital letter or numbers at the end only does not provide security.

Here are a few tips to secure your account and prevent any hacking: 🔐

Mix characters. The more you mix up letters (upper-case and lower-case) and numbers or symbols, the more secure and harder to crack your password gets. However, do not use sequential numbers or letters.
Make it long. Choose a password with at least 12 characters, more if possible.
Do not choose anything personal, like your name and birthday. However, to help you remember it, you can combine different unrelated words in your password or use a passphrase.

You can find here a list of the most commonly used passwords and so examples of the ones you should not use.

💡 The CNIL ( National Commission on Computer Technology and Freedom ) offers a tool to help you quickly create strong passwords using a passphrase. There are other tools such as Avast.
You can use a password manager as a tool. A password manager is an application that securely stores all user passwords, eliminating the need for users to memorize them. Users only need to remember a single password, the master password, which should be as strong as possible while still being memorable. One that is recommended by major cybersecurity players is Keepass. 👉 Learn more here
